How Four Loko Hijacked the Bolivian Carnival

Case Study: «That’s Me» (Yo Soy Ese)

Client: Four Loko

Campaign: Carnival 2026

Phase 1: You Can’t Fake Culture

THE CONTEXT: Every Carnival, Four Loko drops a «Mystery Flavor.» Their goal was to stand out as the «purple cow» among the legacy alcohol brands that traditionally dominate the season.

THE CHALLENGE: Four Loko already owns an irreverent, straightforward, and unpretentious vibe. The real test was translating that personality into the highly nuanced language of Carnival. The Bolivian Carnival has its own archetypes, unwritten rules, and a collective radar that instantly sniffs out when a brand is just paying for screen time.

Slapping some generic dancers, confetti, and bright colors on an ad wasn’t going to cut it. That’s what everyone else was doing.

Phase 2: Listen to the Streets

THE IDEA: A standard focus group would have told us, «Just show the traditional Oruro dancers.» We decided to listen to the actual streets instead.

We zeroed in on the real characters who make the party happen across the country: the guy shivering and complaining about the cold, or the dude who genuinely thought wearing the national soccer jersey was a solid outfit choice. You won’t find these hyper-specific archetypes in a creative brief, but they live rent-free in the minds of anyone who has survived a Bolivian Carnival.

Using this collective memory as our baseline, we built a massive visual universe. By blending digital art with AI, we brought this world to life, animating every character into a breathing ecosystem. This became the foundation for everything that followed.

Phase 3: The Real-Time Co-Creation Engine

THE EXECUTION: Agility was everything. We seeded the campaign with influencers who claimed, «That’s me,» challenging Four Loko to drop them into our Carnival universe.

The audience took the bait instantly. The true driving force behind this campaign was our real-time response engine. As comments flooded in, our system illustrated, animated, and published tailored content on the fly. The audience wasn’t just watching; they were co-producing the campaign right alongside us.

  • 31 brand-new characters were crowdsourced directly from real user comments.

  • Many users proudly adopted a specific brand asset as their personal avatar for the very first time.

  • For 8 weeks straight, we monitored every single asset, tweaking and pivoting in real time. The data steered the ship, the system learned, and we adapted.

To cap it off, we dropped 3 compilation videos that kept viewers hooked, hitting a massive 97% retention rate on TikTok.

Phase 4: Culture is Built, Not Bought

THE IMPACT: We locked in a 97% VTR on organic Meta content and 83.5% on TikTok, pulling in a combined reach of over 1 million people across both platforms.

We didn’t just get eyeballs; we kept them. But our favorite KPIs were the ones that proved genuine brand love in the comment sections:

  • «I want to be Four Loko!»

  • «I was the guy crying because he dropped his Four Loko.»

The campaign also handed us a massive strategic roadmap: Gen Z is owning the TikTok conversation, while Millennials are driving Facebook. That’s high-value, actionable data for all future rollouts.

The Ultimate Takeaway

High-performing branded content doesn’t actually talk about the brand. The biggest lesson here is simple: When the creative framework is built right, the audience will generate the content for you. Not because you forced them into a crowdsourcing gimmick, but because they genuinely felt included in the joke.

I give them a solid 10/10. They completely nailed it. They implemented tweaks we hadn't even considered initially, actively took feedback to optimize in real time, and moved incredibly fast. Ultimately, the results speak for themselves.
